Many beginners assume any metal detector will locate a meteorite. The reality is more nuanced. Most consumer-grade detectors are optimised to discriminate between metals — they're tuned to find coins and jewellery while ignoring iron trash. But meteorite hunting requires the opposite approach: you want a machine that is highly sensitive to iron and doesn't discriminate it away. Understanding the technology is the first step toward productive searching in Scandinavia's varied landscapes.
The Two Main Detector Technologies
VLF (Very Low Frequency) Detectors
VLF detectors are the most common type. They operate by transmitting a continuous sine wave and measuring phase shifts in the returning signal. For meteorite hunting, you need to use a VLF detector in all-metal mode with discrimination turned to zero. Key considerations:
- Ground balance: Swedish soils, especially in Norrland, can be highly mineralised. A VLF detector with manual or automatic ground balance is essential to prevent constant false signals from magnetite-rich glacial soils.
