Why a Standard Metal Detector Won't Always Cut It

Many beginners assume any metal detector will locate a meteorite. The reality is more nuanced. Most consumer-grade detectors are optimised to discriminate between metals — they're tuned to find coins and jewellery while ignoring iron trash. But meteorite hunting requires the opposite approach: you want a machine that is highly sensitive to iron and doesn't discriminate it away. Understanding the technology is the first step toward productive searching in Scandinavia's varied landscapes.

The Two Main Detector Technologies

VLF (Very Low Frequency) Detectors

VLF detectors are the most common type. They operate by transmitting a continuous sine wave and measuring phase shifts in the returning signal. For meteorite hunting, you need to use a VLF detector in all-metal mode with discrimination turned to zero. Key considerations:

  • Ground balance: Swedish soils, especially in Norrland, can be highly mineralised. A VLF detector with manual or automatic ground balance is essential to prevent constant false signals from magnetite-rich glacial soils.
  • Sensitivity: Higher sensitivity helps detect smaller meteorite fragments, but increases susceptibility to ground noise.
  • Frequency: Lower frequencies (below 15 kHz) penetrate deeper; higher frequencies are more sensitive to small, low-conductivity targets.

PI (Pulse Induction) Detectors

PI detectors work by sending rapid pulses of current through the coil and measuring the decay of the induced magnetic field. They do not discriminate at all — they respond to any conductive or ferromagnetic target. This makes them arguably better suited to meteorite hunting in highly mineralised ground, as they are far less affected by soil interference. Drawbacks include higher cost and greater battery consumption.

Complementary Tools

A metal detector is your primary instrument, but effective meteorite hunting in Sweden requires supporting equipment:

  • Strong neodymium magnet: Attach one to a string or telescoping rod to drag over ground surfaces, especially on frozen lakes. Magnetic meteorite fragments will cling to it.
  • Hand loupe (10× magnification): For examining fusion crust texture and chondrule structure on recovered stones.
  • Field knife or small trowel: For carefully excavating targets without damaging fusion crust.
  • GPS with waypoint marking: Record every signal location, even if the find turns out to be slag or a nail. Patterns of signals can indicate productive areas.

Apps Useful for Swedish Meteorite Hunters

Several free and low-cost apps can support fieldwork:

  • Meteoritical Bulletin Database (web): Check known strewn fields and fall coordinates before planning a trip.
  • Fireball reports (AMS / IMO apps): Monitor recent fireball events across Scandinavia. Fresh falls are the most productive hunting targets.
  • Offline topo maps (e.g., Maps.me or Gaia GPS): Essential in northern Sweden where mobile coverage is unreliable.
  • iNaturalist or equivalent: While designed for biology, the geotagged photo function is useful for documenting suspected finds in context.

Setting Realistic Expectations

Even with the right equipment, meteorite hunting demands patience and persistence. The probability of finding a new meteorite on any given outing is low. Searching known strewn fields, areas after documented fireball events, and geologically suitable landscapes maximises your odds. Treat every outing as a learning experience — understanding the signals your detector gives from iron-rich slag, railway debris, and agricultural metal will sharpen your ability to recognise that rare, anomalous signal that could be a genuine space rock.
